Beyond Oil
Of all the problems facing America, the economic shock from $5 per gallon gas is probably worse than drugs, illegal immigration, weather, terrorism, pandemics, education or even the national debt, because it will effect virtually everyone and everything. That is why we are developing a 50 city block research campus in Ft Collins, CO. for alternative energy, transport, water recycling, security and other next generation infrastructures. Within 3 years we can have demonstration models in time to prepare for the economic crisis to come.
Of all the factors that count in the growth of cities, it is the willingness of the population to embrace or resist change that determines its future. We live in a marketplace of ideas that are constantly offered and challenged by those who care. But our lives are about to change by the economic disruption caused by our dependence on oil. The global supply of oil is “peaking” and henceforth may well diminish every year. At the same time demand is out-running supply due to the modernization of China and India. Can business survive $5 per gallon gas? The International Energy Agency has stated, ''The world has never faced a problem like this. The problem will be pervasive and will not be temporary. Oil peaking will be abrupt and revolutionary. It will become a huge disruption to the economy and requires massive mitigation more than a decade before new technologies can have impact”.
Hurricane Katrina was a wake up call and brings to out attention that every city needs to have a plan for the economic shock that will result from Oil Peaking. If we go back to sleep and business proceeds as usual, we may wake up into a new economic condition for which we are not prepared as the price of gas inevitably goes higher. We may see gas pricing, rationing and driving restrictions within the coming decade that cause economic disruption greater than that seen during the 1930’s depression. The experts state that it will happen, although no one knows when. But if we cannot predict when, we can certainly prepare. We at: www.Airpark Village.com have accumulated a library of recent publications describing Oil Peaking and its potentially devastating effects. You can access this information on our web site and determine for yourself what actions need to be taken.
We can begin to prepare for this now by encouraging research and new thinking on
transport, alternative energies, new land use patterns and other infrastructure
changes to replace our dependence on the oil economy. It will take time and the
willingness to experiment to find the right solution. We need to gather the
resources and tap the collective thinking of our brightest minds to test new
ideas and verify their feasibility.
